The Good Old Days

Do you remember the days when we didn't have to worry about bills, work, and broken appliances? Remember the times the only thing we needed to fuss over was who had the newest beanie baby? Remember the years when the cleverest, most rebellious thing we thought of was splashing in the mud puddles and then lying to our mothers about it?

In Economics, we are doing a project on what it will be like in ten years: where we will live, what cars we will drive, and the like. It near brings a tear to my eye to look back and remember how easy we once had it. It's so difficult coming into adulthood.

Jane clearly feels this when she has no idea what her future holds or how to reach it: thankfully, her only care once she finds a job is carrying it out well--her lodging and utilities are all taken care of for her.

Is it worth it? Are the privileges worth the responsibilities? Are the opportunities worth the stress? If you had the choice, which would you choose, a life of simple ease, or a life of tense freedom?

  1. Great post! I remember doing the econ project last year, and i now can make the connection with Jane and her life. If I had the choice I would choose a life of tense freedom! I don't think I could ever be happy with a life of simple ease and monotony. I feel that right now Jane is struggling with this same question. Whether she should stay with a life of simple ease, or risk everything for a life of freedom with Mr. Rochester!

Which one would you choose M.J.?!

  2. I like your last question and I think if Jane were to answer that she would choose "a life of tense freedom." She'd be too bored if she was still living with her Aunt, and not going to school and bettering herself. Also the fact that the feeling of liberty comes up a lot too, and I think that she needs to feel that in order to be happy (just like the rest of us). Also she wouldn't have met Mr. R, or half of the other people she's met. For myself I feel I would do the same. I'm not one of those people that can just relax and be "at ease" all day. I'd go insane! haha

    Great Post Mary!!

  3. Wow, I feel the same about not knowing what the future holds and about college. Like what I want to major and minor in. But something are best enjoyed going into them blind.

  4. Yes, she would get bored! Most times simple ease and monotony seem ridiculous, childish--but every once in a while, near the end of the quarter when everything's falling down at once, I wonder what it'd be like to be little again. Sometimes it's good just to sit and think and imagine without worrying about all those responsibilities.
